LKM Conclave 2015 Resolution

Posted: Tuesday, January 19th, 2016

Adopted by Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Inc. at its Biennial Conclave, July 11, 2015

In response to the discriminatory practices that continue to plague residents living in communities of color; and specifically in response to the recent killings by law enforcement personnel in Ferguson, Missouri, Staten Island, New York, Los Angeles, California, Baltimore, Maryland and in other cities across the United States, the National conclave (National body) of Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Incorporated has resolved that:

Whereas the actions of Law Enforcement Agencies across the U.S. against communities of color and the mentally ill have become more visible;

Whereas the racial overtones and profiling of citizens are denying the civil rights of individuals;

Whereas Law enforcement officers are not being held accountable for misconduct and heinous crimes against residents living in targeted areas;

Whereas some of the practices of local law enforcement agencies are the result of institutionalized racism and illegal practices specifically targeted toward minority groups and the mentally ill;

Whereas the denial of access and lack of community involvement in the electoral process does not allow for full representation by persons with our best interests in mind;

Whereas there should be a greater emphasis within the community on education, youth empowerment and understanding our place in history and the sacrifices made to afford civil liberties and opportunities;

Therefore, be it Resolved that Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Incorporated, a Business and Professional Women's organization, affiliated with the National Council of Negro Women and the Black Women's Agenda, and its chapters will engage its communities in dialogue and educational programs that create a greater understanding of the rights and responsibilities we, as citizens, hold;

We further Resolve that we will take an active role in educating our youth and encouraging our adults in being more responsive to community needs by taking an active role in civic matters; and working with citizen review boards. Further, we will take action to hold our national and local government officials accountable to ensure the respectful and fair treatment of all constituents.
This resolution is adopted on this, the eleventh day of July, 2015
